Our role is to facilitate the Belonger participation and empowerment in the economic development
of the Turks and Caicos Island through entrepreneurship training, business counselling, advisory
and extension services.


          
Training Programs

We conduct training courses, seminars and workshops around the islands to assist small business
owners with specific skills required to start, expand and manage their businesses successfully. The
training courses include:-

I. Entrepreneurship Training Course (ETC) –  an intensive business management and planning
course designed for business owners who wish to expand or improve their business and for the
potential owners who want to start a new business. The course also helps participants to prepare
Business Plans which they can use to source for funds from financial institutions.













II. Financial Detective Series – a three part series designed for owners, managers, record
keeping staff on how to create, read, and understand record keeping systems and financial
statements.  An integral part of this course is how to use the Balance Sheet, Profit and Loss and
Cash Flow to spot problems in the business. This is also extended to Corporate Board Members.

III. Marketing, Customer Service & Record Keeping -  This course looks at marketing to beat
your competitors, managing customer service issues and keeping daily records.

IV. How To Do A Market Survey:  offers techniques for collecting information to
project sales and is designed for business start up or expansion to ensure the viability of their
projects.

V. Business Law:  this is an introduction to the legal aspects of operating a business focusing on
legal obligations, types of contracts, employment law and much more.

VI. Production Planning:  designed for owners of production businesses. It focuses on the most
efficient and cost effective method for producing goods including technology, layout, inputs,
outputs and cost.

VII. Personnel Management:  designed for owners, managers and supervisors offering
techniques to managing staff, including motivation, training and recruitment policies.

          
Business Information/Resource Center:  

Provides a one-stop shop where current and future small business owners can access business
information with the assistance of SEDC staff.  SEDC combines the latest computer technology
along with an extensive small business reference library of hard copy books and publications and
current magazines to help entrepreneurs plan their business, expand an existing business or
venture into new business areas.  We have articles, newsletters, reference books, web research,
magazine publications, start up diskettes and record keeping forms to assist you.

















          Extension Services:  

We conduct periodic and as needed follow up consultation and extension services for clients who
have participated in any of our training programs as well as to walk-in clients around the Turks &
Caicos Islands. It aims at identifying and solving problems as they occur before they become
unmanageable.

In addition, we conduct extension services for farmers in North and Middle Caicos. The farms have
the capacity to produce higher value added crops. Our extension services involve:-

  • dissemination of information to farmers
  • introducing and adopting new farming techniques
  • discussing problems affecting farmers in general
  • formulating plans aimed at solving problems
  • sourcing inputs needed for farms
  • identifying markets for produce".......















         
Advise Government:  

We review government policies and regulations that affect the development of small businesses
and advise on appropriate guidelines.  


         
Small Business Associations:  

Maintain and strengthen the nation's economy by aiding, counselling, assisting and protecting the
interests of small businesses by establishing Small Business Associations on each island. This is
aimed at encouraging members to work and assist each other for a common goal.

We also assist with any business related problems that may be identified by staff or at the specific
request of the clients.
